Our office took part in the competition for the renovation, extension and redevelopment of the La Rochelle Labour Court. The two wings of the existing building were extended to accommodate the offices on the west side, the courtrooms on the east side and, in the central area, the main hall. The chosen layout ensures that parking remains possible in front of the building, while providing a buffer between the building and the road. The two-storey extension of the west wing will be emphasised by the use of local wood cladding, which will contrast with the exterior signage. The extension of the east wing (lower volume), will provide greater height for the new courtroom and will be marked by the use of light-coloured coating. Between the two, in a central position, will be the volume housing the main hall, the heart of the building. It will be entirely glazed onto the public space, its materiality inviting users to come in. The use of glass printing will ensure a perfect balance between the desire to make this space more intimate while preserving as much natural light as possible. Above this volume, an outdoor terrace accessible to staff from the relaxation area will be installed.
